Our History
The story of our workshop begins long before Samarkand—long before 1992. The Badghisi family’s connection to carpet weaving stretches back more than 200 years in Turkmenistan. For six generations, weaving has been our family’s language, our craft, and our way of preserving memory. Every knot tied today is connected to those who came before us.
1992 marked the birth of the Samarkand–Bukhara Silk Carpets Workshop, founded under the guidance of Haji Mohammad Ewaz Badghisi, a master weaver whose lifetime of devotion shaped the identity of our workshop.
Haji Baba, now over 100 years old, remains a symbol of patience, discipline, and love for the craft. Today, his grandchildren, carry the family’s legacy forward with the same sincerity and warmth that define every carpet made here.
Our methods have never changed. The silk still comes from mulberry silkworms. The dyes are still made from plants and roots gathered locally. Colors are created from madder, walnut peel, pomegranate, saffron, onion skins, and wild herbs. Everything is natural, as it was centuries ago. Color comes first—because color carries emotion. Only then come the design, the size, and the thousands of tiny decisions that make each carpet one of a kind.
